My kitchen is in an ell of the house with the roof only a foot or two from the ceiling. I'd like to install a range hood with the exhaust fan going up through the roof. Can I do this myself if I am moderately handy? You can do almost anything, and if we all live long enough, you will get better as you go along. You can install that exhaust fan. You can extend the pipe right through the ceiling and through the roof, using the right collars to make the connection waterproof and airtight. The roof connection is a little tricky, as is any roof work. It is normally done with a rubber "boot" with metal flashing that fits over the pipe nice and snugly.
